arson and fire investigations, marine safety laws, aeronautics, agriculture,

Services: *Serve civil process to District and Circuit Court, such as divorce
papers, small claims, subpoenas, etc. Operate lock-up, transporting of all prisoners
lodged in Luce County Jail. Operate various road controls where traffic tickets
can be issued and arrests made for violation of the law. Complaints related
to criminal or animal problems should be reported to the Sheriff's Dept. so
they can be investigated. Circuit Court jury prospects are notified by Dept.
Marine patrol during the summer season. Supervise land and property sales for
debt purposes. Responsible for registering weapons and issue permits for purchase
of hand guns. Fingerprint applicants for various licenses when fingerprinting
is required. Circuit Court Bailiff is provided by Sheriff's Dept.

*All neglect or abuse cases are handled through Probate Court. Petitions may
be issued to remove children from a home by Probate Judge. Offenses in juvenile
cases are handled. Information is given, then hearing is set upon information.
Juvenile may be turned over to the Family Independence Agency for proper placement
if it is felt necessary to remove him from the community. Estate Division: All
estates of deceased, guardianship & conservatorships mentally ill, minors
and commitments of the mentally ill. Probate Court has jurisdiction of all children
under 17. Marriage licenses may be waived if for some reason individuals do
not feel they can wait for the three day waiting period required through the
County Clerk's Office. Change of names and adoptions.

Services;
*Handles juvenile delinquency cases assigned by probate court. This entails
interviewing the young person in trouble and their family, explains the charges
made against them. Maintains juvenile case records, notes and documents. Investigates
assigned cases in order to develop a social history. Contact is continually
kept with the youth and their family. In order to decide proper action to take
on each case, it is discussed with the Judge of Probate. Attend formal hearings
of assigned juvenile cases insuring that the decision of how to handle the case
is properly carried out. Supervise juvenile placed on probation with parent
or in foster home. Review and discuss adoption cases assigned by Judge. Advise
Youth Involvement Committee on juvenile delinquency problems. Responsible for
developing a Child Care Plan for Luce County.

293 Traffic Court: All traffic violations are handled through traffic court.
293 Criminal Court: Under criminal court the maximum jurisdiction is limited
to high misdemeanors (punishable by imprisonment for more than 1 year) and misdemeanors
(punishable by time in county jail instead of state prison) *Basic procedure
in criminal court matters would consist of first a complaint and then a warrant.
293 Civil Court: Relating to civil matters with jurisdication up to $10,000.
Examples of civil matters would be performance of marriage ceremonies, landlord-tenant
problems, forfeiture of land contracts, etc.
293 Small Claims: Jurisdication up to $1500. Individual is required to waive
counsel, trial by jury and right of appeal.

compromise the 11th Judicial Circuit of Michigan.
Court Sessions: Regular motion days are the first and third Tuesdays of each
month. Other matters are heard as scheduled.
Services Offered:
293 Criminal Cases: Matters are referred to this court after a preliminary hearing
in District Court. Circuit Court has jurisdiction over criminal offenses for
which the maximum period of imprisonment exceeds one year.
2. Civil Cases: Circuit Court has jurisdiction over civil actions for money
damages where the amount claimed exceeds $10,000, divorce, family support and
paternity suits, and general chancery matters.
